Do you ever hear God speaking through secular songs?
I do sometimes. One of those is the song “I Will Wait” by Mumford and Sons. The first time I heard this song I instantly liked it because of the bluegrass sounds of horns, a banjo and a fiddle. It made me tap my feet, smile and want to hear it again.
When I did hear it again though, I listened to the words and thought…”Holy smoke. I can sing this song to God. That can be my prayer to Him.”
After researching a little bit about this song, I learned that singer and songwriter from this band, Marcus Mumford, said this song is about the “challenges of maintaining a relationship amidst the conflicts of life on the road.” *
I don’t know if he was thinking about God when he wrote this, but can’t that be true in our faith journey? I can sometimes be a challenge to maintain an intimate relationship with God admist daily conflicts on the road of life?
So, this becomes a prayer… I will wait for You, Lord. You forgave me. Break my step. Take my flesh and fix my eyes and a tethered mind free from lies. I kneel down and raise my hands and bow my head and wait for You. I will wait now for your return.
“Wait and See” Mumford and Sons
Well I came home Like a stone And I fell heavy into your arms These days of dust Which we’ve known Will blow away with this new sun
But I’ll kneel down Wait for now And I’ll kneel down Know my ground
And I will wait, I will wait for you And I will wait, I will wait for you
So break my step And relent You forgave and I won’t forget Know what we’ve seen And him with less Now in some way Shake the excess
‘Cause I will wait, I will wait for you And I will wait, I will wait for you And I will wait, I will wait for you And I will wait, I will wait for you
Now I’ll be bold As well as strong And use my head alongside my heart So take my flesh And fix my eyes A tethered mind free from the lies
And I’ll kneel down Wait for now I’ll kneel down Know my ground
Raise my hands Paint my spirit gold And bow my head Keep my heart slow
‘Cause I will wait, I will wait for you And I will wait, I will wait for you And I will wait, I will wait for you And I will wait, I will wait for you
